Some of the following may seem humorous but some parents had actually tried them and find that they work.

  • When the child starts to whine, do not raise your voice. Instead try whispering to him. This usually forces him to lower his voice in order to hear what you are saying.

  • Record the child's whining on audio, or even better yet, on video and show it to him only after he has calmed down. He will soon come to realize how silly he sounds and look when he whine. This can help him to learn and recognize before he next starts to do it again.

  • Start whining yourself. Mirror the whining kid. Many times, the whining kid does not know that he is doing that. By mirroring him when he whines, it can surprise him and help him realize that he is behaving as silly as you do.

  • Prevention is better than cure. Set some rules before leaving for a public place together with your kids. If they behave well, reinforce their good behavior by praising them. If they forget, remind them of the agreed rules. Have a post trip debrief once you return back home and talk about the good or bad behaviors during the trip. Apply appropriate consequences accordingly for either good or bad behaviors.
