How To Cultivate Good Reading Habit In Young Children

Reading ability, or the lack of it, has a definite impact on almost every school subject. It is therefore essential that a child cultivates reading habits early. Reading not only helps improve one's vocabulary, it also helps in the growth of knowledge, which leads to development of many other skills in different areas of life.

A child need to first learn to read so that in later years, he can read to learn. Reading broadens a child's sphere of experience. It sharpens his mind and develops his creativity. But the good habit of reading takes time to cultivate so it is best to be nurtured from the earliest days in a child's life.

A baby begins to learn at the very instant of its birth. Infants search their environment to make sense of it. The younger the child, the more open his mind will be and thus easier to inculcate good habits in him. The way in which he first learns is by mere associations, and associations are constantly being made, whether we realise it or not. With these associations, a child begins to form certain habits within his rapidly growing and developing mind. Children are naturally good learners, and they learn best by example so let your child see you read.

Parents are children's first teachers, and most of what a child learns starts in the home. Your child knows what you are doing. Parents can read aloud to their children or just spend time together curled up on the couch as they each read their own book. Relax and have fun together with your child reading books. The time spent in this way also helps build up parent and child bonding. Work reading into daily activities in as many ways and in as easy manner as possible. Make it fun, make it enjoyable. You don't need to schedule specific times to nurture a reader. It is important for parents to make proper associations with the desired behaviour so that good habits can be developed. Children are also quick to learn from the examples of other people too, so if they frequently see adults around them reading, they will understand that reading can be fun and an important part of their life. Take your child to the library regularly, or go shopping for good books together. Let him see that adults are really into reading and that he can do the same too.
