Special Needs Children - Parents and Teachers Partnership

When teachers work with children with special needs, they are also need to work with their families too. The parents are the ones who know the child better than anyone else and should be better equipped to inform teachers of the child's observed 'peculiarities' at home; whether detected from birth or are a result of other difficulties.

Parents' feedback allows teachers to better understand the child and not draw up own conclusions based on a one-sided observation. Eg. Thumb sucking might be a habit picked up from siblings or a need for comfort due to some emotional deprivation. Teachers on the other hand, are partial to the information exchange because of their knowledge from theoretical studies and classroom experiences. From this mutual exchange of information, teachers can then access and implement strategies for enhanced learning and apply corrective intervention. Parents are then expected to reinforce and accommodate at home with the learning and intervention strategies applied in the school. For example: teaching strategies differ for the special needs child with learning difficulties, educating the child will require concrete and visual resources rather than mere verbal instructions. Concepts skills are acquired through the use of colour coded symbols or definitions. Parents might have to follow up with 2nd set of backup lessons taught in class. Parents are also encouraged to help their child develop reading skills by reading stories to them daily.

Teachers also act as a bridge for parents to therapists or other professional who will work with the child, ensuring that communication is clear and helpful among home, school and other professional helpers, eg. 2nd Language teachers, phonetics class teachers etc...Professionals like therapists also play an important part; because of their experiences and expertise, they are able to offer teachers advice on ways to handle aggression and behavioural management.

Teachers, parents and therapists work as tripartite, sharing information, planning and creating the best possible educational experience for the child.
