Helping Children Overcome Fears and Anxieties

Having a child with fears and anxieties is difficult and overwhelming experience for any parent, but remember, there is help.

We can learn how to help children deal with this difficult situation in a non-threatening, creative way. As parents, we can help our children learn skills that can help them overcome fears with confidence. This is necessary to prevent the fears from evolving into phobic reactions.

The most important message for an anxious child is that the parents have confidence both in the child and in the situation. This will go a long way to help him feel much more secure and so, better able to learn how to overcome that situation.

So just how do we teach our children that the fear they feel is really NO BIG DEAL?

Well, for a start, we can help desensitize them to the source of their fear.

If your child is anxious and fearful, then reassure them not to be afraid. Always be understanding. Never yell at your child. Never call them names.

Let your child be a child but at the same time, allow him to be involved in solving the problem of fear instead of sheltering him under your constant protection.

Talk to him about his fears and find out why he is feeling afraid. Sit close to him when you are talking to him but try to avoid a posture that is over protective unless really necessary.

Try explaining the situation to your child, talk to him and provide simple, rational explanations to help your child see a different perspective to his concerns. Give him sensible advice. You can also talk to your child about things that had worried you and how you had overcome those worries. Talking with children about fears and worries can make them seem less overwhelming.

By listening and lending a sympathetic ear, you can actually help him ease off some of the tension and anxiety, and sometimes, just talking about the things that he is afraid of can help him move beyond it.

Teach your child how to think positively. Thinking positive thoughts will help lessen his anxieties.

Positive Self-talk is an important tool, a method in helping children overcomes their worries and fears. Explain to your child that it is important when he is feeling afraid, when he is facing things that makes him feels frightened or worried, to tell himself, "I am able to overcome this."
