Praise

How many times have we heard ourselves reprimanding our kids about the things they had done wrong, or that they were not suppose to do ? Recall those moments and try to remember how you feel. I am quite sure you will agree those were not happy moments.

Now, think about the times when your kids had done something good. Have we missed out on opportunities to praise them for it ?

Although our intention is to correct and direct them to the right way, let us consider that there might be better ways of doing just that.

Many had noted that a little praise is able to achieve much more positive results than a whole lot of criticism. Sad to say, even more had failed to apply that.

When we praise someone, not only that person feels good about it, we ourselves will feel good too. Why not make it a daily habit to find something good about your kids and praise them for it.

Write it down on your calendar, set a reminder note in an appropriate place in the house where you will surely notice it, or even use an object in the house as a reminder. Do whatever you can to remind yourself to praise, not only your kids, but also for other family members.

Someone I know actually tell himself that his toothbrush shall remind him to praise. Every morning, when he brushes his teeth, he is reminded to start the day by finding something good about his family members to praise about. He shared with me how surprise he was with the change of family atmosphere when he started doing so.

Most mobile phones come with an alarm clock or an electronic calendar. You may also like to try setting an alarm signal in your mobile phone to an appropriate time of each day as reminder to praise someone, especially you kids. Perhaps you can set the alarm to sound at the time when you usually have breakfast with your kids, or it may be dinner time. Whatever it is, the point is that we need to remind ourselves to stick with it until it becomes a habit.

Praise encourages. Praise lift the spirit. Praise, when given sincerely, is much more powerful than any other methods to help someone change for the better.

Fill your home with praises, do it sincerely and you too can experience a wonderful change in your family.
